Dear Bronte Officials and all Officials-In-Training
Thank you all so much for nominating for the Waverley Shield on Sunday– we really appreciate it! We’re gearing up for a great day with full focus on giving the kids a terrific, friendly and fun carnival.
Please find attached the current version of the officials allocations. It is a working document which is being regularly updated. If you need changes to be made, please either email me today, or voice these on the day, in area.
As you can see – it’s pretty gappy! Branch has asked that officials who will be attending and who have not yet signed up to please do so asap here. The more officials, the smoother & quicker the carnival….😊

2025 Waverley Shield program – Final
Some reminders if you are a qualified official:
- Breakfast for all officials is at North Bondi SBLSC from 6am.
- 6.45am briefings (7.30am for U8) for all officials in area.
- Please SIGN IN!
- wear your old Branch official shirt or a plain white shirt/top + a hat and your officials badge;
- bring a notepad, pen, refillable water bottle and any snacks you may want; and
- have your log book signed off by your section referee at the end of the Carnival.
- Michele Cole and Donna Hargreaves from SLS Sydney Branch will be circulating to give addition LiveHeats training and answer questions.
Some things to keep in mind if you are a trainee official:
- 30am: meet next to the first aid tent on the beach. At the briefing, you will meet a representative from Branch who is kindly volunteering to be the Officials Mentor. There is a new requirement that trainee officials need to be rotated around 3 areas to have an idea of different aspects to a Carnival. Your mentor will facilitate thisand after the Carnival, will sign off your ‘assessment schedule’. You will likely need to sign a ‘sign-on’ sheet. At every Carnival, these are used to work out if each Club has honoured their volunteer quotas.
- 45am: head to your allocated area on the beach.
- Please wear a plain white shirt or top (no ‘surf club’ gear as officials need to be neutral) and a hat for sun protection. You will be given a uniform when you officiate at Branch or State which you can use for future carnivals.
- At the end of the Carnival, your mentor will arrange to run through your assessment schedule SLSA Technical Official Assessment Portfolio_Dec2024 up at the Clubhouse and sign it off. Please bring a copy of this with you. You will need to scan and send a completed copy of this document to Jamie Vueti at sydofficials@surflifesavingsydney.com.au in order to finalise your qualification.
- If you did the officials course at home – double check you have completed all 5 ofthe ‘SLS – Technical Official’ modules, accessible via your members area account (see here for step-by-step). All certificates of completion need to be sent to Jamie Vueti at the above address + your Working With Children Check number (apply here).
- You may wish to peruse the rules of Nipper races if it’s been a while: see here. Junior Development Resource JDR Surf Sports Events
- Look after yourselves! Bring plenty of water, snacks and don’t forget a small notepad of paper and a pen in case there is a need to manually record any results / information as you go.
- Finally – officials need to be completely neutral. No ‘Bronte/North Bondi/Tama/Bondi’ clothing, no cheering, and no directing / helping the kids in relation to the course or any of the rules. The starter will give the kids a briefing on the race, and they are expected to know the rules. You may find that this is not as strict at the Waverley Shield, but best to keep it in mind as it is very much the case at Branch and State.
